Thanks to everyone for their business and patience this past month as we have undergone several projects. We have filled the framing clerk position and would like to welcome Sadie to our workforce! Upcoming events for the month of April are:

  • April 1st. Tatting Day. We always enjoy seeing these projects come into our shop.
  • April 13th is Scrabble Day. This day celebrates the classic board game Scrabble. A fun idea: glue Scrabble tiles to your scrabble board using the names in your family or a favorite quote or saying and frame it up.
  • If you're not too tired of Easter candy, National Jelly Bean Day is April 22nd.
  • April 28th, Astronomy Day, is a day, or night, to look up at the stars. This holiday was created to teach the public about stars and the wonders of the universe.

Our Canvas Section Has Moved

We would like to let our customers know we still sell blank stretched canvas. Due to a recent accident our canvas section is no longer by the other art supplies. Our canvas is now located in the middle of our gift shop just west of our art supplies. If you have any trouble be sure to ask one of our staff for help. Thank you for your patience as we work on cleaning and rebuilding the former area.

View Custom Framing Materials

We received a suggestion from one of our customers to display our custom frame mouldings and mat boards on our blog so everyone could get a little preview before they came in. I thought it was a great idea. You can view our custom frame mouldings and Artique mat colors at Larson Juhl as well as our Bainbridge mat colors at Nielsen Bainbridge. These sites also offer great framing ideas and suggestions, so feel free to take a look. We still carry Crescent mats. However, Crescent has recently changed their distributor making it difficult for us to provide these mats as readily. I have posted the links below as well as to the right under "Custom Framing Materials" - Kathryn

Turn Buttons

Ever thought of updating that family photo, but still want to keep the same frame? With turn buttons this can be easily done. Turn buttons are small metal tabs, usually 3/4" to one inch long, that screw into the backside of your frame.
The tab, when screwed in tight, holds flush against the backside of your picture keeping the picture in place and attached to the frame. Once it's time to switch out pictures the screws can be slightly loosened allowing the tabs to move away from the picture. The picture can then be removed and replaced with the new one. Tighten the screws and it's finished!

Frame Highlight

Named after the wood it is made of, the Bonanza Wood line of frames is very economical because it is made up of a composite material. Bonanza Wood is a solid material, with a very smooth, wrapped laminate finish. It is not 100% wood, but composite of several woods and glues.

It is great quality and the finish is extremely consistent, equal-to or better than most stained wood finishes. It comes in many colors and shapes making it a very versatile and popular choice.

Float It In Glass

A fun way to mount art is to float it between glass. A "glass float mount" is a mounting process in which a flat art piece is sandwiched between two pieces of glass. This generally means no adhesives, the art is held in place by the weight of the glass.
The frame can be place right next to the boarder of the art, however, by spacing the art away from the frame and cutting the glass larger than the art the raw edge of the art can be seen. This process is commonly used on papyrus, watercolors, pressed flowers, and fabric prints, but can be used for other art pieces.

Happy Thanksgiving

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We are grateful to our customers who faithfully come shop here every year. We have some fun fall decorations and always have our framing. If you have a picture you want framed plan for it to take at least two weeks. Frames Squared

Not all pictures are rectangular. Some pictures are perfectly square, and square can be really fun to decorate with.

However, it is hard to find square frames to fit square pictures. Many customers end up custom framing there square pictures, which is a great option, but not everyone has the time to custom frame.

For quick fixes Bev's carries square frame sizes along with their rectangular. The sizes we carry are 5 x 5, 6 x 6, 8 x 8, 10 x 10, and 12 x 12.

Happy Halloween

Halloween is
coming up and it's time to pull out the spooky decorations! Bev's has a number of frightening, but cute ornaments to help with the festivities. Come on in, take a look, and have an enchanting Halloween!

http://www.bhg.com/bhg/quiz.jsp?quizId=/templatedata/bhg/quiz/data/whatsyourcolorpersonality_10232003.xml
Jan, Megan, and I all took the quiz. Jan and Megan were both yellow personalities, which they did not agree with. I was green and I thought it fit me. Whether we agreed with our results or not it was fun to take the quiz. -Kathryn

More on Hanging

Begin experimenting with the arrangement on the floor and start in the center. Once you have the layout you want trace the shapes of your frames on Kraft paper or newspaper and tape to the wall. Measure from the top of your frame down to the wire. Mark this distance on your wall or paper before nailing. This mark will be where you place your nail, or bottom of your hook. Then nail in, hang your picture, and enjoy. -Kathryn

Hanging at Eye Level

When hanging your pictures remember pictures should be hung at eye level. So where is eye level? For the average height eye level is about 64”. But let's face it we are not all 5'8” tall. Hang the picture at your eye level. Take your height and subtract about 4” then hang the middle of your picture at this height. If your family height varies, for example my husband eye level is 73” and mine is 57”, choose a height in between both eye levels. -Kathryn

Fun idea

Last Sunday in the USA Weekend designer Vern Yip had some fun decorating idea's. My daughter Allie and I decided that we really liked this one and wanted to share it.

"A giant wall map is perfect for a study or family room, Yip says. Maps are educational and timeless, and large-scale versions are available in styles from antique to uber-modern. For a traditional space, select a large map in an antique style, cut it apart and frame the sections."

So off I go to get a map. This map is HUGE! Too huge. So I'm going to have to crop it quite a bit. The Antarctica and Hawaii have to go. After all it is mostly for decoration, right? I'm going to put a frame around the whole thing rather than small frames around each panel. Hopefully it will turn out great. I'm prepping the room this week and should have the map ready by next week. I'll take a picture of the finished project and post it then. Wish me luck, I'm going to need it. It's a bigger project than Vern made it out to be. :) Jan
